Exploring Non-League Day: Finding Your Next Football Destination" - Dronfield Town

As the international break looms, local football fans may feel cut adrift with professional leagues taking a backseat to international play. But fret not! This weekend presents a unique opportunity for enthusiasts to immerse themselves in the vibrant non-league scene flourishing in Sheffield and its surroundings. Leading up to Non-League Day on March 23rd, we're here to preview the thrilling local fixtures and urge you to experience the action firsthand at one of our esteemed local clubs.

Today, our focus is on Dronfield Town FC. Positioned 9th this season, they've garnered 61 points from 38 games. This marks Dronfield's tenth consecutive season in the NCEL division 1, with this season poised to be one of their strongest yet, having finished in the top ten only once in the past decade.

Dronfield are known for experiencing slow starts in division one. This season, they failed to secure a win in their first six games but quickly turned things around, winning their subsequent six matches. Notably, they staged a remarkable comeback, clinching a 4-3 victory against Harrogate Railway after trailing 3-1 just half an hour into the game.

Despite often finding themselves in relegation battles around Christmas, Dronfield consistently rally in the new year, comfortably securing mid-table finishes in seven of the last ten seasons. Maybe the Dronfield lads love the warmer weather? Could it be that they're buzzing from an excellent team new year party? Or could it even be down to local journalist Alan Biggs' linesman skills? The notable local football writer had to once step in after an official was injured, "Biggsy" was deemed the most knowledgable in attendance to enforce the offside rule. Thankfully non-league regulations meant Alan didn't have to have any contact with VAR!

The club boasts tidy facilities and a warm welcome from dedicated volunteers who take pride in their club. Their well-decorated clubhouse showcases football memorabilia from the area, appealing to fans of all stripes. Adjacent to the pitch, a small football court allows younger supporters to play while spectators enjoy the game, albeit with caution for stray balls.

Known for their community spirit, Dronfield hosts an annual 10k race culminating at the club, a successful event that supports various charities. Additionally, they express gratitude to fans by offering free entry to select fixtures, typically around Christmas and the last home game of the season, fostering a fantastic atmosphere.

This Saturday, Dronfield faces league leaders Shirebrook Town in what promises to be a thrilling clash. While Dronfield enters the game with four wins from their last six matches, Shirebrook boasts an impressive six consecutive wins without conceding a single goal.

With an average crowd of 134 this season - up 16% from the previous season - Dronfield is an excellent choice for Non-League Day, promising a lively atmosphere as two sides in superb form go head-to-head.
